Bowen University's Gifty Nnaji Wins Amnesty International 2024 Intervarsity Debate

Gifty Nnaji, a student from Bowen University, has emerged as the winner of Amnesty International Nigeria’s 2024 Intervarsity Human Rights Debate. The second edition of the annual debate, held at Baze University in Abuja, aims to enhance understanding and integration of human rights within university communities.

Abdul Habeeb Korede from the University of Ibadan secured second place, while Enebechi Obumneme Joel from Enugu State University of Science and Technology took third place.

The event featured participants from twelve universities representing Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. Participating institutions included the University of Lagos, Bowen University, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, University of Ibadan, Obafemi Awolowo University, Cross Rivers State University, University of Calabar, Landmark University, Adamawa State University, Ahmadu Bello University, University of Nigeria Nsukka, and Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka.

Isa Sanusi, Country Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, emphasized that the debate is part of the organization’s broader initiative to promote human rights education and foster a culture of debate among young Nigerians. "Our goal is to empower Nigerian youth with a deep understanding of human rights and enhance their ability to engage in meaningful discussions that can drive positive change," Sanusi stated.

This initiative underscores Amnesty International’s commitment to engaging with Nigerian youth through innovative platforms, thereby cultivating future leaders who are well-versed in human rights issues.
