Dansol High School Executive Director Omotara Olanitori urged students to stay disciplined, embrace media literacy and critical thinking as Unique High School won the 2026 Press Day inter-school debate in Lagos.

The Executive Director of Dansol High School, Omotara Olanitori, has advised students to remain focused on their studies, embrace discipline despite the distractions of the digital age, and invest in values that would positively shape their future.

She gave the charge at the 2026 Press Day inter-school debate organised by Dansol High School, Agidingbi, Ikeja.

According to Olanitori, the event was designed to expose students to the principles and responsibilities of journalism and equip them with critical thinking skills.

Olanitori disclosed that the school’s Press Club was launched to help students understand journalism, the role of the media and the ethics of reporting.

She added that the initiative aimed to give students a solid foundation in media literacy.

“We are conscious of the reality that the world of press and reporting is changing. What we are after is for the students to have the basic knowledge and understanding of the profession,” Olanitori said.

Reacting to an observation made by the guest speaker, Lagos State Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Mr Bankole Ajigbotafe, that none of the students indicated interest in becoming future political leaders, Olanitori said the response reflected the concerns of many young Nigerians about the country’s current realities.

She urged governments at all levels to heed citizens’ yearnings by showing empathy, improving governance, and addressing the socio-economic challenges facing the people.

The competition, themed ‘Politics without victimisation,’ required participating students to examine the role of politics in promoting fairness, inclusion and responsible leadership without intimidation or oppression.

Olanitori expressed satisfaction with the quality of the presentations from the four participating schools, noting that the contestants demonstrated a sound understanding of the topic and were well prepared.

In his remarks, Ajigbotafe noted that politics exists in every sphere of life, including schools.

He enjoined the students to stand for truth, remain courageous and pursue their academic and future aspirations with determination.
