Dr. Mansurat Isiaka Urges UNILORIN Students to Enhance Security Awareness and Friendships
Dr. Mansurat Isiaka calls on UNILORIN students to be cautious with their social circles and highlights campus safety improvements by the Vice Chancellor.
Dr. Mansurat Isiaka, a former Coordinator of the Department of Criminology and Security Studies at the University of Ilorin, has issued a strong appeal to students, urging them to exercise heightened caution regarding their social circles. Speaking in an interview with the UNILORIN Bulletin, Dr. Isiaka emphasized the importance of carefully selecting friends to enhance personal safety and avoid potential risks associated with social interactions.
Dr. Isiaka expressed deep concern over the increasing incidents of violence, kidnapping, and other criminal activities involving students, which she attributes to the influence of problematic peer relationships. She highlighted that the problem is exacerbated by reckless behavior and the misuse of social media among the youth.
She advised students to be selective in their associations, noting that not all friendships are beneficial. Dr. Isiaka also encouraged parents and guardians to actively monitor their children’s friendships and be aware of their social interactions, as a means of safeguarding their well-being.
In addition to personal vigilance, Dr. Isiaka suggested that students should regularly inform family members about their whereabouts to enhance their safety. She also recommended that parents provide their children with modest items to avoid attracting criminals who might target individuals with conspicuous wealth.
Commending the University’s efforts in campus security, Dr. Isiaka praised Vice Chancellor Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, for his initiatives to enhance campus safety. These include the control of vegetation around the campus and the installation of solar-powered streetlights to ensure better visibility. She further recommended that the University Security Division increase nighttime patrols and install CCTV cameras in key areas to prevent criminal activities.
Dr. Isiaka’s call to action underscores the need for a collaborative approach between students, parents, and university authorities to create a safer academic environment.
