Enugu State Government Applauds Civil Servants' Commitment to Productivity

The Enugu State government, led by Governor Peter Mbah, has lauded the dedication and work ethics demonstrated by civil servants in the state. Emphasizing the core principles of discipline, responsiveness, accountability, traceability, transparency, and optimal performance, the government praised the high turnout of civil servants across various offices.

The government, through an inspection tour of ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) today, urged staff to prioritize productivity to achieve strategic objectives. These goals include elevating the state's economic standing from its current $4.4 billion to $30 billion and eradicating poverty within the next four to eight years.

Professor Chidiere Onyia, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance during the tour. He commended the civil servants for fully resuming work on Mondays, emphasizing that the previously issued sit-at-home order had been effectively discarded.

Prof. Onyia highlighted the state government's commitment to reforming the civil service, ensuring a conducive work environment, and addressing the needs of employees. He noted significant improvements, such as the full restoration of electricity at the secretariat complex, achieved through collaboration with the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) and the maintenance of generators.

While assuring continued efforts to fulfill the government's mandate, the SSG urged public and civil servants at both state and local government levels to prioritize efficient service delivery and high productivity. He stressed the importance of political office holders leading by example.

The SSG, acting on the governor's directive, visited local government areas and specific agencies, including the civil service secretariat, Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board (ENSUBEB), and the Post Primary School Management Board (PPSMB). Observing over 90% compliance in attendance, he emphasized the transition from focusing solely on attendance to measuring productivity.

To enhance performance tracking, he revealed plans by the Governor's Delivery Unit and the Ministry of Labour and Productivity to integrate a framework for measuring productivity in day-to-day public service activities.

The SSG also reassured the public and investors of the state's heightened security measures, making it one of the states with fewer crimes and a secure environment for businesses. Sanctions, according to civil service rules, await habitual latecomers and absenteeism offenders, as the administration remains committed to upholding state policies. Offices visited during the inspection included those in Enugu North, Enugu South, and Enugu East local government areas, as well as the State Secretariat Complex, Ministry of Justice, ENSUBEB, and PPSMB.
