FEC Approves Establishment of National Citizens Value Brigade to Enhance Educational Standards in Nigeria

On September 23, 2024, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved the establishment of the National Citizens Value Brigade across primary and secondary schools in Nigeria. This initiative aims to address the declining values among the youth and cultivate role models and ambassadors for the nation.

During a press briefing, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, shared details of the council's decision, which was made under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu. Idris highlighted the alarming trend of value erosion among younger Nigerians, which has contributed to various forms of misconduct that diverge from the country's traditions and norms.

The council's resolution included significant policy changes within the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, aimed at strengthening the national value system. "The national citizen’s value brigade will be established in all our primary and secondary schools," Idris announced. He emphasized the need to reinforce core values that Nigeria is known for, acknowledging a recent decline in these principles.

In addition to the brigade's establishment, the FEC approved the incorporation of a national value charter into basic and post-basic school curricula. This inclusion will also extend to civic education, ensuring that fundamental values are taught and embraced from an early age. Moreover, the council mandated that these values be adopted by government appointees as a prerequisite for entering public service.
