The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has mandated the Federal Ministry of Education, the Nigerian Educational Research Development Council (NERDC), and relevant government agencies to collaborate with the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to develop a comprehensive curriculum for Citizenship Studies in Nigerian schools. This directive, announced on the NOA's X account on October 3, 2024, aims to enhance civic education among students and foster a deeper understanding of their roles as active citizens in Nigeria.

The Citizenship Studies curriculum is set to address crucial areas of knowledge, equipping students with an understanding of their fundamental rights and responsibilities as Nigerian citizens. The initiative seeks to promote active participation in civic duties and governance processes while instilling a sense of national identity and unity.

This curriculum development will encourage pride in Nigeria's cultural and political heritage, emphasizing critical thinking skills that allow students to analyze societal issues and develop solutions for national development. It will also promote values of social justice and tolerance, highlighting fairness and equality among Nigeria's diverse backgrounds.
