The Federal University Lokoja (FUL) on Monday, January 26, 2026, conducted a re-orientation seminar aimed at addressing students’ attitude toward General Studies (GST) courses and charting strategies to enhance engagement and academic performance.

The seminar, which began at 10:00 a.m., convened principal academic stakeholders, including the Provost, Directors, Deans, Heads of Departments (HODs), GST coordinators, GST instructors, examination officers, and student union representatives.
Hosted by the School of General Studies, led by Dr. Habeeb Ayoola Ayinla, the event opened with a welcome address highlighting the central role of GST courses in shaping students both academically and socially. Dr. Ayinla emphasized that the programme contributes to producing well-rounded, responsible graduates and stressed the need for collaboration between coordinators, instructors, management, and students to ensure its success.
He further underlined GST’s significance in nation-building and character development, urging stakeholders to adopt effective teaching, learning, and assessment strategies that reinforce the relevance of the programme. Dr. Ayinla also expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi, and the student body for their support of the School of General Studies.
In his remarks as Chief Host, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi, reminded students that FUL operates a cumulative academic grading system, where early-year performance contributes significantly to final degree classifications. He cautioned students against underestimating GST courses, stating, “You cannot wait until your final year to aim for a first class. Your journey begins from day one. Every course counts.”

Additionally, the Director of Advancement and Linkages, Prof. Joseph Abel, presented a paper titled “The Peculiarity of General Studies (GST) in Nigerian Universities: Problems and Prospects,” addressing the challenges and opportunities inherent in the programme.
The seminar concluded with actionable recommendations to enhance student participation, instructional delivery, and continuous improvement in GST performance, reinforcing FUL’s commitment to producing academically excellent and socially responsible graduates.
