The National Assembly is facing strong criticism from former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, for their recent acquisition of luxury cars, with Ezekwesili describing it as the "biggest threat to our Democracy."

Ezekwesili's condemnation comes in the wake of revelations that lawmakers had procured 109 brand-new 2023 model Toyota Land Cruisers for senators and 360 Toyota Prados for House of Representatives members, each vehicle costing over ₦100 million.

Expressing her outrage on social media, Ezekwesili characterized the move as "insensitive" and "ludicrous."

In a strongly-worded tweet, she questioned, "You all had the audacity to spend scarce public resources on luxury cars at a time when the majority of their citizens cannot afford food, transportation, school fees, and medical bills due to the cost of living crisis?"

Ezekwesili continued her rebuke, asserting that the extravagant purchase showcased the lawmakers' disconnection from the hardships faced by ordinary Nigerians. She addressed the members of the National Assembly directly, stating, "At this stage, it is evident you want to continue with your serial bad behavior."

"Since not even one of you in the National Assembly recognized the heartlessness of that decision to purchase 360 new Toyota SUVs for yourselves amid this severe economic distress faced by the citizens and the country, please be aware that you all are the biggest threat to our Democracy."

The former minister further warned the lawmakers of impending consequences, emphasizing, "And very soon too," suggesting that accountability for their actions is anticipated.
