In a move aimed at boosting education and staff morale, Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State announced a reduction in tuition fees for Ebonyi State University and a salary increase for its staff. The announcement came during the 12th to 15th combined convocation ceremony of the university, held last Saturday.
Governor Nwifuru revealed that tuition fees at Ebonyi State University have been slashed by 10 per cent, easing the financial burden on students and their families. Additionally, the governor approved a 20 per cent increase in salaries for academic staff and a 10 per cent increase for non-academic staff. This double-edged approach aims to support both students and university personnel.

The governor's announcement also included other incentives to encourage educational excellence and boost university funding. He disclosed that indigenes of Ebonyi State who graduate with first-class degrees from the state university will receive automatic employment as graduate assistant lecturers. It is unclear if this offer extends to graduates with first-class degrees from other institutions.

Governor Nwifuru further stated that the university's subvention has been increased from N200 million to N280 million per month. This significant rise in funding is intended to boost staff morale and expand educational access for more students in the state.

In his speech, the governor encouraged the graduating students to use their knowledge and skills to address local challenges. He emphasized the importance of applying "homegrown solutions to solve homegrown problems" before seeking external assistance. The governor concluded by urging the graduates to be "good progressive ambassadors" and reminded them that their education has equipped them with the tools to succeed and solve national problems.
