Kwara State University Marks International Day of Persons with Disabilities with Inclusivity Drive

Kwara State University's Disability Support Office in collaboration with the Department of Special Education on Friday, December 5, 2025, marked the 2025 International Day of Persons Living with Disabilities with a programme attended by a cross section of KWASU staff and members of the public, many of whom are living with disabilities. 

In his address of welcome, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, emphasised that KWASU was already taking concrete steps to advance the theme of the day which advocated “Fostering Disability-Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress."

Professor Jimoh who was represented by the Director of Academic Planning, Professor Emmanuel Ajani noted that KWASU has instituted policies that support the academic, social, and emotional well-being of staff and students with disabilities, adding that some of the University’s financial relief measures to include a ₦100,000 tuition fee waiver for students with disabilities as well as a ₦50,000 monthly allowance for staff with disabilities.

The Vice-Chancellor reiterated that the University remains committed to improving access to learning by ensuring its campus is friendly to the needs of all learners.

The convener of the event and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Olubukola Christianah Dada also reaffirmed KWASU's commitment to institutional inclusiveness, stating that the University currently has 46 students living with disabilities across various departments and programmes.

Highlighting the resilience and contributions of students with disabilities to academic excellence at KWASU, Professor Dada called for more advocacy and open dialogue in order to create an environment where every person, regardless of ability, can thrive.

The guest speaker during the event was Dr. Oluwasesan Popoola, a specialist and expert in deaf education from Lagos State University of Education.
