LASU Clarifies Blended Learning Policy: Only 197 of 4,095 Courses Affected, Students Not Staying Home

Lagos State University (LASU) has issued a clarification following recent reports that misrepresented its decision to transition certain large-capacity courses to online delivery.

The University confirms that only 197 of the 4,095 courses offered across all faculties will be delivered primarily online. These courses are specifically high-enrolment lectures with over 400 students.

The measure is aimed at enhancing the learning experience in large classes and forms part of LASU’s strategic adoption of modern blended learning methods. Tutorials, seminars, laboratory practicals, and smaller courses will continue in-person, ensuring students remain fully engaged on campus for the majority of their academic activities.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, emphasized that the narrative suggesting students are being asked to “stay at home” is incorrect. The blended learning policy affects less than 5% of the University’s courses and is intended to manage large classes efficiently, a challenge common in Nigerian universities. Students continue to have full access to campus facilities, including libraries, laboratories, sports complexes, and medical services.

The policy aligns with the National Universities Commission’s (NUC) push for e-learning integration. To support students, LASU has invested in upgraded campus Wi-Fi, dedicated ICT hubs, and reliable on-campus power supply, among other infrastructure improvements.

The University calls on students and parents to rely on official LASU channels for accurate information and reassures the community that this data-driven, targeted approach is designed to optimize resources and prepare students for a digitally-enabled world.

Thomas-Onashile Oluwayemisi A., Deputy Registrar/Coordinator, Centre for Information and Public Relations, issued the statement on behalf of LASU Management on Friday, 13th November 2025.
