Miva Open University Hosts Inaugural Public Lecture on Open Distance Learning

Miva Open University recently held a groundbreaking public lecture that emphasized the transformative potential of Open Distance Learning (ODL) in Nigeria. The event featured notable speakers, including Sim Shagaya, the university's chancellor, and Chris Maiyaki, acting executive secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC).

In his address, Shagaya highlighted the crucial role of technology in reshaping higher education, urging educators to embrace competition and collaboration to build a robust tertiary education system. He encouraged openness to change and continuous improvement, stating, “We must be open to constructive criticism and strive to do better every day.”

The registrar of Miva, Iheanyi Akwitti, praised the event as a success, noting its role in showcasing Miva's leadership in ODL and fostering collaboration toward accessible, quality higher education in Nigeria.

Maiyaki discussed the evolving role of university administration within an ODL framework, describing ODL as a cost-effective and flexible educational method that transcends geographical boundaries. He emphasized its potential to address Nigeria's educational challenges, where nearly two million children apply for university each year, but only 500,000 to 700,000 are accommodated.
