Nasarawa State University Mourns Pioneer Vice-Chancellor, Emeritus Professor David Adamu Baikie, OBITUARY

The Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) community is in mourning following the death of its founding Vice-Chancellor, Emeritus Professor David Adamu Baikie. Professor Baikie, an esteemed elder statesman and a celebrated figure in Nigerian academia, passed away in his hometown of Zaria, Kaduna State, on Friday, December 12, 2025, at the age of 94.

The Vice-Chancellor of NSUK, Professor Sa’adatu Hassan Liman, expressed profound grief over the loss, recognizing Professor Baikie's monumental contributions to the institution and the Nigerian educational sector at large.

Described as an erudite academic and seasoned administrator, Professor Baikie held the distinction of being the first Professor of Education in Northern Nigeria. His legacy at NSUK is defined by his tenure as the inaugural Vice-Chancellor from February 2002 to December 31, 2009. During this critical period, he was instrumental in laying the foundational infrastructure and academic framework that enabled the successful take-off and accelerated growth of the university.

Following his leadership as Vice-Chancellor, Professor Baikie continued to serve the institution as the immediate past Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, consistently offering his expertise and wise counsel.

In an official statement, the University Management highlighted that Professor Baikie's advice was pivotal in shaping NSUK’s trajectory, transforming it from a nascent state institution into a reputable 21st-century citadel of learning. The university community collectively mourns the loss of his guidance and vision.

On behalf of the Governing Council, Senate, Management, staff, and students of the University, Professor Liman extended heartfelt condolences to Professor Baikie's immediate family, friends, associates, and the wider university community.

The University’s acting Information and Protocol Officer, Jaafar Abdullahi Abubakar, anipr, concluded the official release by praying that the Almighty God grants the family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.
