The admission was formalized during the WorldSkills General Assembly held in Lyon, France, on September 9, 2024. This new status positions Nigeria to compete in global skills competitions, elevating the country’s vocational and technical education system to an international level.

Dr. Samson Opaluwah, President of the Sector Skills Council for Building in Nigeria, expressed excitement over this achievement, stating that it reflects the success of Nigeria’s National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF). “This is a remarkable achievement that demonstrates the success of our National Skills Qualification Framework and our commitment to equipping our youth with globally competitive skills,” Opaluwah noted.

He emphasized the importance of preparing the Nigerian workforce for the global economy, noting that the 2026 WorldSkills Championship will serve as the country’s debut in the competition. This will provide young Nigerians with the opportunity to showcase their skills on a global stage, improving their employability and prospects for international success.

Opaluwah pointed out that Nigeria’s inclusion in WorldSkills is not only about participation but also about transforming the country into a hub for skilled labor exports. “The diligent entrenchment of the NSQF will undoubtedly provide our youth with opportunities as well as the skills required to succeed globally. This sets the stage for the export of skilled labor from Nigeria to nations in need, ultimately enhancing earnings for our country,” he said.

The Sector Skills Council for Building also acknowledged the critical roles played by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and the Federal Ministry of Education in securing Nigeria’s membership. Dr. Opaluwah expressed gratitude for their efforts, particularly the commitment of the Honourable Minister of Education and the NBTE team.
