Obafemi Awolowo University's Department of Civil Engineering has received a generous donation of over 1.5 million Naira to establish a food bank aimed at supporting students during the ongoing examination period. The initiative, spearheaded by an alumnus from the graduating set of 2012/2013 Session, aims to alleviate the impact of Nigeria's current economic challenges on students' academic performances.

Engr. Biodun Otunola, Managing Director of Planet Projects, contributed one million Naira to the food bank and emphasized the importance of collective support in providing immediate relief to students in need. Other alumni, such as Engr. Joy Okoror Olurin, have also rallied behind the initiative, underscoring the commitment of OAU Civil Engineering alumni to the welfare of current students.

A departmental committee comprising Dr. A. A. Akindahunsi, Mr. A. M. Olajumoke, and Mrs. O. F. Rotimi has been tasked with organizing the procurement and disbursement of food items. Since the commencement of disbursement on Wednesday, February 28th, over 100 students have benefited from the initiative, providing much-needed support during the examination period.

The President of the Association of Civil Engineering Students (ACES) expressed deep appreciation on behalf of the students, acknowledging the alumni's continuous efforts to ease students' experiences within the department. He conveyed gratitude for the ongoing donations and prayed for increased success for all the donors.

This initiative builds upon previous contributions from alumni towards the development of the Department of Civil Engineering. Past donations include a 12.5 million Naira contribution from the graduating set of 1982 to address equipment needs in the Transportation and Environmental Engineering Laboratory, as well as a donation of close to 1 million Naira from the 1997/1998 set for the purchase of hard copy books. Individual alumni, such as Engrs. Ajibola Alamutu, Olukayode Awe, and Oluseyi Adeyemo, have also made significant contributions to meet various departmental needs.

The initiator of the food bank expressed hope that this initiative would inspire other alumni groups to join in supporting current students. This collaborative effort reflects the strong sense of community and commitment among OAU Civil Engineering alumni to ensure the welfare and success of students during their academic journey.
