Renewed Focus on Tertiary Education: Experts Advocate Curriculum Overhaul at LASU Postgraduate School's Inaugural Public Lecture
The inaugural Lagos State University Postgraduate School Public Lecture brought together stakeholders from academia, industry, and government to discuss the theme "Renewed Hope Agenda: The Role of the Academia."
In a bid to address the evolving needs of society, stakeholders in the education sector are championing a revamp of the curriculum to ensure tertiary institutions produce graduates equipped with skills that match contemporary demands. This call to action came from Professor Rotimi Oladele, the Executive Secretary of the Institute of Entrepreneurs, Nigeria, during the maiden Lagos State University Postgraduate School Public Lecture held on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at the Aderemi Makanjuola Lecture Theatre, main campus, Ojo.

Themed "Connecting Town and Gown," with a focus on "Renewed Hope Agenda: The Role of the Academia," the event attracted a diverse array of dignitaries from academia, industry, and government. Professor Oladele emphasized the disparity between higher education in Nigeria and the skills required for future success, noting that current graduates often lack the practical skills needed for the workforce.
To address this challenge, Professor Oladele advocated for a rebranding and restructuring of courses to align with local resources, emphasizing the importance of engagement destinations for postgraduates in a data-driven society.
Following Professor Oladele's thought-provoking discourse, Dr. Babatunde Adeboye, president of the Society of Energy Administrators in Nigeria, shed light on the imperative of developing the Energy Service Management Compliance Bill in Nigeria. Dr. Adeboye underscored the academia's pivotal role in policy implementation, stressing the need for specialized training, research development centers, and the recognition of Energy Management as a distinct field.

In her remarks, the Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, emphasized the crucial role of universities and research institutions in shaping societal development. She urged scholars to champion a renewed hope agenda that prioritizes social justice, equity, and sustainable development.
The Honourable Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hon. Tolani Sule, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the significance of teaching, research, and innovation in driving human capital development and policy advocacy.
Hosted by the Dean of the Postgraduate School, Professor Olawale Ibrahim Olateju, the event also showcased the achievements of the Postgraduate School, including the elimination of certificate backlogs and the digitalization of administrative procedures.

Ambassador Edward Olutoke, Global President of the Global Association of Postgraduate Students (GAPOGS), highlighted the lecture's objective of bridging the gap between academia and the broader community.
Among the attendees were university management members, deans, professors, and students from various faculties and postgraduate programs, illustrating the widespread interest and commitment to advancing tertiary education in Nigeria.
