In a significant step towards adult literacy, the Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP) and the Taraba State Agency for Mass Education celebrated the graduation of their first set of adult literacy classes in Taraba on Thursday.

Dr. Augustina Godwin, the Taraba State Commissioner for Education, praised the initiative, describing education as the foundation of socio-economic development in any forward-thinking society. The commissioner, represented by Alhaji Idris Goje, the permanent secretary of the ministry of education in Taraba, highlighted that the programme aligns with Governor Agbu Kefas’s education revolution agenda.

Alhaji Goje appealed for the continuation of the programme, emphasizing its transformative impact and potential to alleviate poverty in the state. He commended the initiative to educate adults in Taraba and encouraged the graduates to continue their educational journey.

Dr. Fatima Aliyu, the national coordinator of the programme, revealed that the VCDP supports not only agricultural production but also initiatives to empower women and youth in the state. Represented by Dr. Musa Dalang, Aliyu stressed the importance of adult literacy in enhancing their understanding of the Value Chain Development Programme and societal events.

The state commissioner for agriculture and food security, Prof. Nicholas Namessan, and the executive secretary of the Taraba State Mass Education Board, Mr. Obadiah Andrew, echoed that literacy extends beyond reading and writing to include knowledge acquisition for societal development. They urged those who cannot read and write in Hausa and English to take advantage of the vocational and functional skills training provided by the programme.

The Nigerian Tribune reported that 70 participants from the Howai VCDP adult literacy centre and the Wuro serve VCDP literacy centre graduated from the adult literacy school in Taraba, which commenced in 2022.
