Tension at ABSU as Security Officer Brutalizes First Year Female Student

A 100-level female student of Abia State University (ABSU) Uturu campus was allegedly assaulted and brutalised by a school security officer last Monday. Eyewitnesses described a series of events leading up to the assault, which reportedly stemmed from an ongoing dispute over access to toilet facilities.
According to witnesses, the security personnel arrived amidst chaos, wielding guns and cutlasses, escalating the situation further. The altercation led to the security officer brutally beating the student until she became unconscious.

The victim, identified as Dominic Chizurum, resisted being taken away and was subjected to a brutal attack, with the officer allegedly slamming her head against a cupboard and ripping her clothes during the struggle. She sustained injuries including the loss of several teeth, cuts, and hair loss, indicating possible physical dragging or manhandling.
While some accounts suggest the student retaliated by slapping the security officer after being struck first, the severity of the response has drawn widespread condemnation.

According to a source made available to myschoolnews, the altercation stemmed from a heated argument between the victim and the security officer. She asserted that the dispute was not serious and escalated when the security officer slapped the student, prompting her to retaliate. She emphasized that while the student may have slapped back, the security officer's extreme response was unwarranted.

Despite calls for transparency and accountability, the security officer has been identified as Mr. Ugochukwu Onyemere. Efforts to obtain official statements from the Dean of Student Affairs, the Student Union Government (SUG), and the school's Chief Security Officer have reportedly been unsuccessful.
The student is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Anambra State, where the severity of her injuries has hindered communication. Concerned students are calling for intervention from various authorities, including the Abia State Governor, the Abia State Commissioner of Police, and human rights activists, to ensure justice for the victim and hold the university accountable for its security measures.
