Tinubu Approves Conversion of Tai Solarin University of Education to Federal Institution
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the conversion of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ogun State into a Federal University, making it the first federally owned tertiary institution in Ogun East senatorial district.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the conversion of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, Ogun State, into a Federal University. This decision makes TASUED the first federally owned tertiary institution in Ogun East senatorial district.
Established in 2005 by the Ogun State Government, TASUED is Nigeria's first specialised university of education. It was named after Dr. Tai Solarin, a renowned activist and founder of Mayflower School in Ikenne. With its well-developed infrastructure and robust academic programs, the university's transition requires minimal federal investment.
The President announced the approval on Friday, acknowledging the Ogun State Government for facilitating the takeover of one of its premier educational assets.
"This is an opportunity for the Federal Government to honour Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who pioneered the revolutionary free education programme in Western Nigeria, and Dr. Tai Solarin, who dedicated his life to educating our children and instilling patriotic and leadership values at Mayflower School," President Tinubu stated.
He also recognised the contributions of the Awujale of Ijebuland, who played a crucial role in preventing TASUED’s closure in 2012, just seven years after its establishment.
Awolowo and Solarin were celebrated figures from Ogun State’s Eastern Senatorial District, which encompasses Ijebu and Remo. The transition of TASUED into a Federal University of Education aligns with the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening teacher education and enhancing instructional quality at all academic levels.
