UNICAL Academic Don Calls for Comprehensive Policy Framework to Tackle Poverty, Unemployment, and Insecurity

Dr. Bassey Anam, a Senior Research Fellow and lecturer at the Institute of Public Policy and Administration (IPPA), University of Calabar, has called for a sustainable government framework to tackle poverty, unemployment, and insecurity in Nigeria.

Dr. Bassey Anam, a Senior Research Fellow and lecturer at the Institute of Public Policy and Administration (IPPA), University of Calabar, has called for a sustainable government framework to tackle poverty, unemployment, and insecurity in Nigeria.

He made this appeal during the 3rd Institute Lecture series held at the Senate Chamber of the university.

Dr. Anam highlighted the interconnectedness of poverty, unemployment, and insecurity, stressing the need for a comprehensive policy approach. He proposed a framework titled "Poverty, Unemployment, and Insecurity Nexus: Public Policy Options for Social Protection Interventions in Nigeria by 2030" to guide the country's efforts in addressing these critical issues.

The researcher noted that while the government has implemented various public policies to address these challenges, there has been limited progress due to issues such as poor funding, lack of coordination, inadequate cooperation from farmers, and a shortage of extension workers. He also pointed to corruption, weak governance, policy inconsistencies, and poor evaluation as key factors hindering success.

Dr. Anam advocated for an integrative approach to public policy design, communication, evaluation, and implementation, as well as a sustainability framework to tackle the root causes of poverty, unemployment, and insecurity.
