In a concerted effort to confront the growing challenge of school abductions and violence in Nigeria, UNICEF and representatives from Nnamdi Azikiwe University have come together to address the pressing issue head-on. As Nigeria reflects on the tragic 10th anniversary of the abduction of the Chibok girls, the discussion underscores the critical importance of safeguarding educational environments and protecting the nation's children.
During the summit, UNICEF's Representative in Nigeria, Ms. Cristian Munduate, stressed the immediate need for action to combat both the symptoms and root causes of the crisis. With education being a fundamental right and a pathway out of poverty, Munduate highlighted the sobering reality that many Nigerian children are unable to access this essential resource due to pervasive threats of violence.

Over the past decade, conflict-related violence has exacted a heavy toll, with thousands of children abducted, hundreds killed in attacks on schools, and countless others living in fear. This environment of insecurity has led to a significant number of children being reluctant to return to school and the closure of numerous educational institutions across the country.

UNICEF Nigeria is calling on governmental bodies, partners, and the international community to take decisive action in line with the Minimum Standards for Safe Schools. This comprehensive approach includes bolstering safe school infrastructure, implementing robust security measures, and prioritizing education in national policies and budgets. Additionally, the agency advocates for the provision of alternative learning pathways, such as radio and television programs, to ensure continued access to education during times of disruption.
