UNILAG Sustainability Challenge 2.0 Honors Eco-Champions for Environmental Contributions

In a ceremony held at the University of Lagos Green Hub, outstanding participants of the ongoing Sustainability Challenge 2.0 were duly recognized and rewarded for their commendable efforts in promoting environmental sustainability. The event, which took place on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, marked the second award ceremony of the semester, celebrating achievements made between December 2023 and January 2024.

Among the distinguished awardees was Fincky Cleaning Services, represented by Agboola Zainab, who received recognition for the highest number of collections, totaling an impressive 15,310 bottles. Mrs. S. A. Folami of the Central Research Laboratory was honored for the highest individual collection, amassing a noteworthy 2,329 bottles. Additionally, Miss Sumayyah Adelakun and Mr. Ayodele Adeyelu received accolades for their remarkable contributions, securing the highest collection made by a student (1,856 bottles) and the third-best collection overall (1,273 bottles), respectively.

Notable contributions from academic staff were also acknowledged, with Dr. Olapade of the Physics Department and Dr. Fatsuma Olaleru of the Zoology Department receiving commendation for their significant involvement in the initiative.

Dr. AbdulGaniy Adelopo, the Project Lead of the Sustainability Challenge, highlighted the collective impact of the participants, revealing that a total of 507,137 bottles had been collected during the semester. This effort, he noted, has effectively prevented the emission of 76.07 tons of CO2 into the environment, underscoring the tangible benefits of sustainable practices.

The ceremony witnessed the presence of dignitaries and prize winners, including the Coordinator of the Works and Physical Planning Unit, Mr. Olaniyi Ayeye, and Dr. Azeez Oladele of the Bursary Unit, ISL, who were on hand to present prizes to the deserving recipients.

The presentation of awards not only serves as a gesture of appreciation but also aims to encourage continued participation in the Sustainability Challenge. By recognizing the impactful contributions of individuals and organizations, the initiative strives to foster a culture of environmental stewardship within the university community.
