Young Man Becomes First African American Man to Earn Ph.D. in Human Centered Design at University of Washington
Jay L. Cunningham has achieved a historic milestone as the first African American man to graduate with a doctorate degree in Human Centered Design from the University of Washington (UW). Reflecting on his educational path, Jay noted, "I could’ve never imagined what life had in store for this small-town boy, from rural Mississippi.”

Sharing his accomplishment on LinkedIn, Jay wrote, “I became the FIRST African American man to graduate with a Ph.D. from University of Washington Human Centered Design & Engineering. This historic milestone is not only super personal to me, but sets a precedent for so many future scholars to come. In addition, I had the honor of being a reigning University of Washington Regent while experiencing this moment.”

Expressing his thankfulness, Jay credited his family, friends, colleagues, mentors, and extended communities for their unwavering support, “I’m extremely grateful for my family, friends, colleagues, mentors, and extended communities for their constant support throughout my 10-year academic journey", he wrote.

Reflecting on his educational path, Jay noted, “Starting from junior college at East Mississippi Community College, undergraduate at The University of Alabama, and both master and doctoral degrees from University of Washington College of Engineering—4 Computer/Information Science & Engineering degrees. I could’ve never imagined what life had in store for this small-town boy, from rural Mississippi.”
