The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele, on Wednesday, 21st January 2026, received a delegation from the Association of Community Health Practitioners, Borno State Chapter, led by the Chairman, Mr. Mohammed Baba Aji, at the Muhammadu Buhari Senate Building.

Professor Mele welcomed the delegation and endorsed the proposal to introduce a Bachelor of Science programme in Community Health, describing the initiative as both timely and impactful. He commended the association for their dedication, teamwork, and commitment to bridging the gap between the university and the host community, noting that the programme aligns with UNIMAID’s core mandate of teaching, research, and community service.
He further suggested that the association organize workshops, sensitization, and awareness sessions for students and staff on critical issues such as health, environment, and wellbeing. He emphasized the need to involve the Students’ Affairs Division and the Students’ Union Government to ensure smooth coordination and effectiveness. Professor Mele assured that once the proposal is formally reviewed by the University Management, it would receive the necessary support to benefit both students and the wider community.
In his remarks, the Chairman, Mr. Aji, congratulated UNIMAID on its golden jubilee, recognizing the university’s long-standing contributions to education and human capital development in the North-East and across Nigeria. He highlighted that the proposed Bachelor of Science programme would address the shortage of trained community health professionals, particularly in rural areas, while creating local opportunities for youths to acquire healthcare skills. This initiative would also reduce the cost and challenges of seeking such training outside the state, improve access to quality education, and strengthen the healthcare system through locally trained manpower.

The visit concluded on a cordial note, with both UNIMAID and the association reaffirming their commitment to collaborative efforts aimed at enhancing health education and community wellbeing.
