A Nigerian man, John Temitope Eperetun, has been awarded the prestigious Chevening Scholarship to pursue a master’s degree in International Development at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom.

Eperetun celebrated his achievement on LinkedIn, expressing that the scholarship would help him realize his lifelong dream of studying a development course. Growing up in a conflict-torn community in Kaduna state, Nigeria, he experienced firsthand the challenges of accessing basic services, which influenced his decision to study a course that would equip him with the knowledge to improve access to essential social services.

The scholarship will enable Eperetun to pursue his goal of becoming an international development expert, focusing on sustainable and workable solutions to Nigeria’s pressing challenges, particularly in the areas of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), education, and conflicts.

Out of 8,000 applications from Nigeria, Eperetun was one of 50 outstanding scholars to receive the Chevening Award. He expressed his excitement about studying at the University of Birmingham, which is ranked among the top 30 universities for Development Studies worldwide.

In another related story, Nigerian teacher Namse Udosen, who faced several rejections in his attempts to further his education in the UK, finally won the prestigious Chevening Scholarship. Udosen, who obtained his bachelor's degree in Educational Administration and Planning from the University of Calabar, Nigeria, and later earned a master’s and doctorate from Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria, had previously applied to the Mandela Washington Fellowship and Erasmus Mundus for scholarships but was rejected.

Both Eperetun and Udosen's stories highlight the determination and resilience of Nigerian scholars in pursuing their educational goals despite challenges.
