COOU, Anambra Government Partner to Strengthen Creative and Entertainment Industry

Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Anambra State Ministry of Culture and Tourism following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at developing the creative and entertainment sector in the state.

Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Anambra State Ministry of Culture and Tourism following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at developing the creative and entertainment sector in the state.

The agreement, formalised on Tuesday, January 10, 2026, marks the beginning of a collaborative initiative designed to identify, nurture, and promote young talents across music, theatre, and related creative disciplines.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Mr. Donatus Onyeji, explained that the partnership aligns with the state government’s broader vision of repositioning Anambra as a vibrant cultural and entertainment hub. He noted that the introduction of the “Onwa December” entertainment programme under the administration of Chukwuma Soludo had transformed the state’s festive season, attracting major entertainers and significantly boosting cultural activities. According to him, the collaboration with COOU would provide structured opportunities for young actors, musicians, and performers to develop their skills and gain wider exposure.

Heads of Departments present at the ceremony commended the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that would bridge the gap between academic training and industry practice. The Head of Department of Music, Rev. Fr. Dr. Jude Orakwe, expressed appreciation to the state government for selecting the university as a partner, assuring that students would be adequately prepared to meet professional and global standards. Similarly, the Head of Department of Theatre Arts, Dr. Anthony Nnalue, described the partnership as a significant opportunity for students to showcase their creative abilities beyond the classroom.

The Head of Department of English, Dr. Ikechukwu Asika, also welcomed the initiative, noting that it would provide a broader platform for students to transition from informal performances to professional engagement within the creative industry.

In her response, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kate Azuka Omenugha, thanked the state government for its commitment to promoting arts and culture, while commending the impact of the Onwa December programme in energising the state’s entertainment landscape. She reaffirmed the university’s readiness to maximise the partnership, pledging that COOU would produce talented graduates capable of contributing meaningfully to the growth of the creative economy.

The MoU is expected to create new opportunities for students in music, theatre arts, English, and other creative fields, reinforcing the university’s commitment to innovation, practical learning, and community engagement.
