Ehime Mbano Community Protests Closure of Imo State Polytechnic
Indigenes of Ehime Mbano Local Government Area in Imo State protest closure of Imo State Polytechnic, demand fair allocation of educational institutions.
Indigenes of the Ehime Mbano Local Government Area in Imo State have taken to the streets in a peaceful protest against the recent closure of Imo State Polytechnic. The protest, which took place yesterday, saw hundreds of residents voicing their concerns about the current administration's decision to shut down the institution.
The protesters expressed their dissatisfaction with Governor Hope Uzodimma's decision, comparing it to the actions of the previous administration under Rochas Okorocha. One resident, who spoke to the news men on condition of anonymity, remarked, "Rochas gave us this Polytechnic, and now, Hope Uzodimma closed it. Yet, some may be happier with Hope than Rochas," highlighting the mixed sentiments within the community.

As the demonstrators marched through the town, holding placards and chanting slogans, they highlighted what they see as an unfair distribution of educational institutions across Imo State. The anonymous source further questioned the rationale behind the government's decisions, saying, "Hope converted the headquarters at Umuagwo to a university.
Rather than move the headquarters to either the Ehime Mbano or Orlu headquarters, he created a new headquarters in his village Omuma in the same Orlu zone. Now he turns around to close the Ehime Mbano Polytechnic. What is the logic?"
The protesters' grievances also pointed to broader issues of regional inequality, noting that other states in Nigeria have more balanced distributions of institutions and facilities. The community members are urging the state government to reconsider its decision and ensure a more equitable distribution of educational resources.
