The Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Professor Chidiebere Onyia, has called for a radical overhaul of Nigeria’s educational paradigms, emphasizing the need for contextual learning, inclusivity, and resilience driven by digital and integrative approaches.

This call was made during the 19th Inaugural Lecture of Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu, titled “Motion Without Movement: A Retrospective Introspection on Curricular Sedimentation in Digital Ontology.”
Professor Onyia stressed the importance of moving away from compliance-based education toward a value-driven system that fosters ethical leadership, transdisciplinary knowledge, critical thinking, cooperation, and inclusivity. He warned that outdated curricula have led to curriculum sedimentation, fragmenting knowledge and hindering meaningful progress in schools.
“Educational systems must redefine themselves as spaces of real development, places where hegemonies are upended, and change is nurtured,” he stated, urging leaders to adopt reforms that integrate research insights from the past two decades to build inclusive and dynamic learning environments.
The lecture emphasized that digital transformation should go beyond bureaucracy to effect genuine educational transformation, ensuring that knowledge creation becomes social, dynamic, and ethically grounded.
In his opening remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke, praised Professor Onyia’s profound analysis and reaffirmed the university’s rigorous evaluation of professors based on research and academic excellence.
The Chairman of the University’s Board of Trustees, Prof. Bartho Okolo, lauded the lecturer’s professional depth and urged education stakeholders to implement the recommendations presented. Prof. Sergius Udeh, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) and Chairman of the Inaugural Lecture Committee, commended Professor Onyia for upholding the university’s high academic standards despite his demanding official responsibilities.

The lecture attracted distinguished guests, including the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe (Agbogidi), vice-chancellors, heads of tertiary institutions, and principal officers of Godfrey Okoye University, highlighting the institution’s commitment to research, academic excellence, and thought leadership.
