Federal University of Lafia Hosts 13th Annual ELTAN Conference, Vice-Chancellor Highlights Teachers’ Role in Realising Students’ Potential
The event, themed "Advances in ELT for Pedagogical Implementation of 21st Century Skills," was supported by the British Council, iatefl Associate, Africa ELTA, and FULafia.
Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) recently hosted the 13th Annual National Conference/Workshop organized by the English Language Teachers Association of Nigeria (ELTAN), in collaboration with the Department of English and Literary Studies.
The Vice-Chancellor of FULafia, Professor Shehu Abdul Rahman, emphasized the critical role of teachers in helping students achieve their potential. In his address, delivered by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic Affairs, Prof. Aleruchi Chuku, Abdul Rahman thanked ELTAN for organizing the event and highlighted the importance of such gatherings in promoting the university’s visibility. He urged teachers to adopt creative methods to make students enjoy learning English.

Dr. Kennedy O. Edegbe, President of ELTAN, expressed appreciation to FULafia for hosting the event, describing it as “remarkable.” Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Professor Muhammad Tanko Aliyu, also commended the Department of English and Literary Studies for consistently organizing conferences.
Professor Halima Idris Amali, Head of the Department of English and Literary Studies, thanked Abdul Rahman for his continued support.
The keynote speaker, Professor Adewole A. Alagbe of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, delivered a lecture on “A Sociolinguistic Perspective of Development in ELT for Pedagogical Implementation of 21st Century Skills,” emphasizing the need for updated teaching methods in English language instruction.
The event, held at the Mallam Adamu Adamu Twin Hall on the Permanent Site Campus of FULafia, concluded with a cultural performance by students from the Department of Theatre and Media Arts.
