FUPRE Launches Waste Management Programme for 2025/2026 Academic Session

The Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE), Delta State, will launch a new waste management and technology programme in the 2025/2026 academic session. Announced by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Akpofure Rim-Rukeh, this initiative includes a Post Graduate Diploma in Waste Management and Technology.

The Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE), Delta State, is set to introduce a pioneering waste management and technology programme in the 2025/2026 academic session. This initiative aims to address environmental challenges through innovative solutions and practical waste management strategies.

The announcement was made by the Vice-Chancellor of FUPRE, Prof. Akpofure Rim-Rukeh, during the launch of the Zero Waste Campus Project, an initiative sponsored by the Community Development Advocacy Foundation (CODAF). Prof. Rim-Rukeh emphasized the university's role as a hub of knowledge, dedicated to solving environmental issues, particularly those related to waste management.

“We are committed to transforming waste into valuable resources,” Prof. Rim-Rukeh stated. “Our goal is to enhance campus sustainability and extend these benefits to the broader community. We are addressing a significant gap in sustainability education with this new programme.”

The Vice-Chancellor also highlighted the university's plan to offer a Post Graduate Diploma in Waste Management and Technology, aiming to bridge the knowledge gap in sustainable practices. This programme is expected to provide students with specialized skills to contribute effectively to waste reduction and management.

Richard Benin, Executive Director of CODAF, expressed his support for the initiative, urging other institutions to prioritize responsible consumption and waste reduction. He praised FUPRE for being the first institution in Nigeria to embark on this ambitious project and called for the establishment of a Post Graduate Programme on Zero Waste.

Benin emphasized the project's comprehensive strategy to foster a culture of sustainability on campus, including initiatives like reusable containers, waste sorting education, and advocacy for sustainable alternatives. He believes that with the approval of the Post Graduate Programme, FUPRE could become the first institution globally to offer such a course, setting a benchmark for others to follow.

This new programme reflects FUPRE's commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation, positioning the university as a leader in sustainable practices within the academic community and beyond.
