The Acting Vice Chancellor of Gombe State University (GSU), Prof. Sani Yauta, has vowed to elevate the university's global standing through strategic collaborations and support for research.
The Acting Vice Chancellor of Gombe State University (GSU), Prof. Sani Yauta, has reiterated his commitment to positioning the institution on the global academic map through strategic collaborations and an enabling environment for impactful research.
In an exclusive interview, Prof. Yauta disclosed that with the support of the Gombe State Government, GSU is poised to expand its academic offerings significantly. He revealed that the Faculty of Environmental Sciences at the Dukku Campus is set to commence academic activities in December, introducing four new programs: Architecture, Estate Management, Quantity Surveying, and Building Technology. This development follows the recent approval by the National Universities Commission (NUC) for resource verification.
"We are working tirelessly to make GSU the best in the country through innovations and attractive incentive packages," Prof. Yauta said, emphasizing the institution's commitment to excellence.
Highlighting GSU's unique offerings, he noted that it is the only university in Nigeria's Northeast region concurrently running both medicine and pharmacy programs.
Prof. Yauta also commended Governor Inuwa Yahaya for his timely intervention in resolving the recent strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other unions, which had disrupted academic activities for over seven weeks. The governor's prompt release of funds addressed the unions' demands, ensuring a swift resolution to the crisis.
The Vice Chancellor further expressed gratitude to the university's Governing Council, led by Senator Joshua Lidani, for its instrumental role in fostering development within the institution. He highlighted several achievements facilitated by the Council, including:
- Securing over ₦200 million for promotion arrears before the strike.
- Facilitating the release of over ₦500 million for the Dukku Campus's takeoff.
- Ensuring affordable tuition fees for less privileged students.
- Overseeing numerous completed and ongoing infrastructural projects.
With 53 undergraduate and 96 postgraduate programs, all fully accredited by the NUC, GSU continues to attract students from neighboring states due to its reputation for quality education and relative peace within the region.
"Our strategic location in the heart of the Northeast and our robust academic offerings have positioned us as a preferred choice for students across the region," Prof. Yauta remarked.
He affirmed that his administration remains steadfast in its mission to elevate Gombe State University to a globally recognized institution, fostering innovation and academic excellence.
