How a Coursemate Landed a Full-Time Job Through WhatsApp: A Story of Networking and Opportunity

Lukman Sarki, a former coursemate, has secured a full-time job at Union Bank Plc, thanks to a connection made through WhatsApp. This remarkable story highlights the power of maintaining strong professional relationships and leveraging social media for career advancement.

The encounter took place at a recent event organized by the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) in Bauchi, which focused on Mandela Fellowship and scholarship application procedures. The event provided a platform for networking and sharing career opportunities. It was here that I, a former UDUS Chemistry student from the Class of 2020, reconnected with Lukman Sarki after three years.

Sarki, who had completed his one-year National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Minna, Niger State, recently undertook a nine-week on-the-job training program with Union Bank Plc in Ikeja, Lagos. Following a competitive selection process, he was posted to Bauchi, where he reached out to me to catch up.

What was particularly exciting about our conversation was Sarki’s revelation that he secured this position through a WhatsApp link shared within our departmental group. This opportunity emerged from a connection facilitated by a fellow classmate, demonstrating how crucial it is to stay engaged with your network and utilize digital platforms effectively.

Originally from Kebbi State and having lived in Sokoto and Abuja, Sarki’s journey underscores the importance of staying connected with colleagues and actively participating in professional networks. His move to Bauchi, after completing his NYSC, highlights the dynamic nature of career paths and the role of opportunity in shaping professional trajectories.

I, having recently completed my own NYSC, was thrilled to learn of Sarki’s success and am eager to build a prosperous future alongside such dedicated individuals. Additionally, the event allowed me to meet Bilkis, another UDUS alumna, who, despite hailing from Niger State, shares a common educational background with us from the prestigious Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto.

Moral Lessons from This Experience:

  1. Cultivate Strong Interpersonal Relationships: Maintaining good connections with schoolmates and colleagues can open doors to valuable opportunities.
