Speaking during the opening session, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, said that this year's conference brought people from all walks of life to discuss issues bothering the country, especially tertiary institutions and proffer solutions that would be used by government and other stakeholders in resolving issues affecting the education sector.
He also extended his appreciation to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abbas, for providing an enabling environment for the Deans across both federal and state universities to discuss this all-important speaking Vice-Chancellor, the Chairman of the occasion and former Minister of Education, Professor Ruqayyatu Ahmad Rufa'i, pointed out that tertiary education must be funded sustainably and play its competitive role in the global space. She expressed optimism that at the end of the conference, scholars would come up with a collection of ideas for a better funding system of tertiary institution of Nigeria.

While describing the theme of the conference as apt and timely at this turning point, Prof. Abbas, argued that addressing the present-day challenges of our education system requires a holistic approach, emphasizing the need to look into this critically to address the negative drift currently impacting our national circ le.While congratulating the Faculty for hosting yet another conference for the second time 17 years after, Prof. Abbas also used the medium to welcome all the participants and wished them fruitful iscussions.
In his welcome remarks, the Chairman, Committee of Deansof Nigerian Universities, Professor BayeroI. Haladu, said that the committee organized the conference on an annual basis to discuss issues bothering the education.
He enumerated some challenges facing tertiary education to include budget constraints, proliferation of universities and politicization, among others. On the way forward, the scholar advocated for the prioritization of the education, the establishment of an endowment fund, reviving the culture of digital learning and genuine reforms in the sector.
While presenting the lead paper, the Vice Chancellor of Al-Istiqama University, Sumaila, Prof. Salisu Shehu lamented. hat for the past two decades, Nigeria had allocated less than 10% of its annual budget to education, which was supposed to be a right in any civilized country, adding that it was sad nowadays that there was no meeting point between the children of the haves and have-nots in terms of the quality of the education they received because of poor funding.“Education is an existential need as the primary and central factor that initiates and ignites development,” he added.He offered suggestions on the way forward to include putting education first, the diversification of sources of funding, collaborations and partnerships and endowments, among others.
On his part, the keynote speaker, Professor Abdulrashid
Garba, who was represented by Professor Ahmed Iliyasu, emphasized that for any country to develop its education sector, it must be in a good shape for which university based unions had been fighting for many years.
