In a recent development, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has taken disciplinary measures against Corps members posted to Bauchi State for the 2023 Batch A, Stream 1. Out of the total 1,405 Corps members, 12 are mandated to repeat the one-year compulsory service, while 22 others face an extension of service for varying degrees of offenses committed during their tenure.

The actions were taken in accordance with the rules and regulations of the NYSC scheme, specifically for cases of absconding from places of primary assignment.

Despite these disciplinary measures, the NYSC, through the Acting Director of the North-East Area Office, Alh. Abubakar Mohammed, has assured all outgoing 2023 Batch ‘A’ Stream 1 corps members that they will receive their January 2024 allowances before the end of the current year. He encouraged them not to solely rely on government-paid jobs but to leverage the skills acquired during the NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Programme.

During the collection of Certificates of National Service, Mrs. Rifkatu Yakubu, the State Coordinator of NYSC, urged the Corps members to avoid social vices that could tarnish their image and that of their families and institutions of graduation. She emphasized the NYSC Director General’s advice to avoid night journeys and to break their journey at designated places for safety.

The State Comptroller of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Bauchi State Command, Abdullahi Adamu, warned Corps members against illegal means of traveling abroad. Highlighting the potential pitfalls they might encounter in the labor market, he emphasized that engaging in illegal avenues could lead to transnational crimes, punishable by at least five years of imprisonment.
