UNICEF Organizes Climate Change Quiz for Gombe Secondary School Students
Held at The Evolution Hotel, Tunfure, Gombe, the quiz competition brought together students from various secondary schools, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the environment for future generations. Dr Clement Adams, the Officer in Charge (OIC) of the UNICEF Bauchi field office, highlighted that the competition provided a platform for students to have fun while showcasing their critical thinking, teamwork, and communication skills.
In commemoration of the 2023 World Children's Day, the Bauchi Field Office of the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) collaborated with Gombe State's Ministry of Education and the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape (ACReSAL) Project to organize an inter-school quiz competition for secondary school students in Gombe State. The event aimed to raise awareness about climate change and enhance students' knowledge, skills, and attitudes toward sustainable climate action.

Dr Adams encouraged students not to fear wrong answers but to actively participate in answering questions, fostering a better understanding of climate change beyond classroom teachings.
Gombe State Commissioner of Education, Prof. Aishatu Maigari, commended UNICEF for its partnership with the state government in implementing projects and programs aimed at ensuring a better future for children. She expressed Gombe State's openness to more partnerships, particularly in creating conducive and safe school environments for effective learning.
The quiz competition saw Government Girls Mega College (GGMC) Doma emerge as the winner, demonstrating excellence in answering the highest number of questions correctly. Other participating schools, Government Day Secondary School (GDSS) Gandu and Government Day Secondary School (GDSS) Gombe, secured the second and third positions, respectively.

Following the competition, students expressed joy and gratitude for their victory, recognizing the significance of education for personal and societal development. UNICEF's activities for World Children's Day included a tree-planting campaign at Government Science Secondary School Gombe, promoting environmental preservation among children.
The Gombe ACReSAL Project Coordinator, Sani Adamu Jauro, commended UNICEF for the collaboration, emphasizing the project's engagement with children across schools in the state to instill the habit of tree planting for a healthier environment.
