Delivering the 19th Inaugural Lecture of the 2023/2024 Academic Session, titled "The Adult, The Enigma, The Method and the Andragogy of it All," Professor Bakare emphasized the complexities of adulthood and the pivotal role of Andragogy in adult education. She defined adulthood as a phase of complete physical and intellectual growth, requiring a respectful and inclusive teaching approach.
Highlighting the core principles of Andragogy, Professor Bakare stressed the importance of adult learners understanding the relevance of their education and focusing on problem-solving and practical applications over theoretical knowledge. She advocated for a shift from traditional face-to-face teaching to utilizing Information Communication Technology (ICT) for virtual learning, acknowledging initial resistance to this change.
Professor Bakare also addressed the challenges associated with integrating ICT in Adult Education, including technophobia, infrastructure issues, affordability, and the need for proper training. She recommended the creation of university-run Cyber Café Hubs and e-learning platforms to support adult learners.
