UNILAG TCEBCEM Leads Land Restoration Efforts in Commemoration of World Environment Day
The TETFund Centre for Excellence in Biodiversity Conservation & Ecosystem Management (TCEBCEM) at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) organized a seminar and tree-planting event to mark World Environment Day, focusing on land restoration efforts.
In a bid to address environmental challenges and promote land restoration, the TETFund Centre for Excellence in Biodiversity Conservation & Ecosystem Management (TCEBCEM) at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) organized a seminar and tree-planting event to mark World Environment Day.
The event, held on June 5, 2024, featured a keynote speech by Professor Ronke Yemisi Aderinboye from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta. Professor Aderinboye emphasized the importance of land restoration in combating desertification and drought, highlighting techniques such as reforestation, soil health improvement, water management, cover provision, and drought resilience building.
Addressing the audience, Professor Khalid Olajide Adekoya, representing TCEBCEM Director Professor Bola Oboh, stressed the collective responsibility to safeguard the environment. He reiterated TCEBCEM's commitment to environmental sustainability through tree planting and postgraduate programs in related fields.
Professor Alabi Soneye provided an overview of World Environment Day, setting the stage for Professor Aderinboye's presentation. Professor Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe emphasized the need for balancing development with environmental preservation, citing examples like the Niger Delta region.

Following the discussions, TCEBCEM members, supported by the University's Parks and Gardens Unit, planted ten King Palm trees to commemorate World Environment Day and reclaim land behind the Faculty of Science building. The event aimed to instill environmental consciousness in students and the community.
World Environment Day, observed annually on June 5, underscores the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable practices. Through initiatives like TCEBCEM's seminar and tree-planting event, stakeholders are mobilized to combat environmental degradation and promote land restoration for a healthier planet.
