University of Abuja Approves Promotion of 218 Staff, Including 30 Professorial Appointments

The Governing Council of the University of Abuja, chaired by Senator Dr. Olanrewaju Tejuoso, has approved the promotion of 218 members of staff, including 30 academic staff elevated to professorial ranks, following the successful completion of the University's comprehensive promotion exercise.

The Governing Council of the University of Abuja, chaired by Senator Dr. Olanrewaju Tejuoso, has approved the promotion of 218 members of staff, including 30 academic staff elevated to professorial ranks, following the successful completion of the University's comprehensive promotion exercise.

The promotions to the professorial cadre were based on positive external assessment reports on candidates’ scholarly publications and were ratified during the Council’s meeting on Thursday 11 and Friday 12 December 2025, at the Main Campus. Among these, 14 scholars were promoted to Professor, while 16 others advanced to Associate Professor.

Other academic promotions include 12 Senior Lecturers, seven Lecturer I, one Lecturer II, and one Senior Librarian. Non-teaching staff promotions were also reviewed for the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 exercises, resulting in one staff promoted to Level 15, 22 to various Level 14 positions, 29 advancing within the senior staff cadre, and 115 non-teaching staff promoted to Level 13 and below.

The professorial appointments span a wide range of disciplines, including poetry and psychoanalytic studies, directing and communication aesthetics, feminism and gender studies, philosophy, chemical engineering, civil engineering, applied chemistry, theoretical physics, internal medicine (neurology), dermatology, neurosurgery, gynaecology and obstetrics, and radiology.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Hakeem Babatunde Fawehinmi congratulated the promoted staff, describing the exercise as a testament to the University’s commitment to merit, academic rigour, and institutional development. He emphasized that the promotions represent both recognition for past achievements and a renewed responsibility to mentor younger academics, strengthen research output, and contribute to national development.

Professor Fawehinmi further noted that the University remains committed to transparent processes, staff development, and a research-driven culture, positioning the institution for national and global relevance.

“The University is now better positioned to pursue excellence and advance its goal of becoming a world-class institution. With the guidance of Council, management is determined to build an environment where merit is promptly recognised and where staff can thrive as we steadily position the University among leading institutions,” he added.
