The Directorate of Gender and Sustainable Development Studies (DGSDS), Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED), Ondo, has organized a one-day seminar for students of the institution.

The seminar, themed Compulsory General Studies on Gender Education: SEA 002 for Degree 1–4 Students and GSE 124, 223, and 224 for NCE 1–3 Students”, was attended by both Degree and NCE students.

Speaking on “Thriving Amid Economic Uncertainty and Surveying the Future”, Dr. Mathew Ayoola of the Department of Agriculture, Faculty of Vocational and Technical Education, AFUED, identified unemployment, limited job opportunities, delayed marriages, crime, rising cost of living, and insecurity as evidence of Nigeria’s current economic challenges.

According to Dr. Ayoola, these issues have resulted in frustration, hunger, high transportation costs, increased house rents, and mounting family demands. As a remedy, he urged students to embrace skills acquisition and entrepreneurship as alternative sources of livelihood.

He defined an entrepreneur as one who identifies a need in the marketplace and works towards fulfilling it, listing possible ventures including:

  • Bee-keeping
  • Recharge card printing and sales
  • Food production, processing, and packaging
  • Phone repairs, software development, and digital marketing
  • Data analysis
  • Seedling production
  • Poultry and rabbitry
  • Snacks production
  • Batik tie-and-dye
  • Soap making

He further stressed the importance of mentorship and role models for success in entrepreneurial ventures.

Also speaking, the immediate past Director of Medical Services, AFUED, Dr. Adekunle Ekundayo Ogunmosin, addressed issues surrounding LGBTQ2+, explaining that sexual orientation differs globally in terms of acceptance and legality. He warned students to be cautious of organizations from developed countries that may use financial incentives to promote practices that conflict with local cultural and religious beliefs.

In another presentation on “Students, Gender and Nigerian Politics”, Dr. Charles Omotayo encouraged students to engage actively in politics at institutional, community, and national levels, stressing that such participation would enable them to contribute meaningfully to national development.

Similarly, Dr. Omolara Awe delivered a paper on “Human Trafficking and Sexual Behaviors”. She highlighted the dangers of human trafficking and warned students against falling prey to fraudulent offers of opportunities abroad. On sexual behaviors, she advised students to confide in counselors and medical professionals for guidance, while cautioning against rape, cohabitation, and other practices that could derail their academic pursuits.

Dr. Awe emphasized the need for students to lead disciplined lives, noting that this would enable them to fulfill their academic and life goals.
