The Acting Vice-Chancellor of Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), Professor Otoabasi Akpan, has called on the University’s alumni to actively mentor students and leverage their networks to strengthen institutional development.

His remarks were delivered during the 2025 General Meeting of the Port Harcourt branch of the Alumni Association on Sunday, November 30, 2025, in the Garden City.

Professor Akpan stressed that collaboration with stakeholders is key to unlocking opportunities for the Alumni Association and the broader University community. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to elevating AKSU’s academic and institutional profile, noting ongoing efforts to engage top-performing graduates in academic roles.

Highlighting progress under his leadership, Professor Akpan revealed that four new Faculties had been established within three months, bringing the total number of Faculties to twelve. This expansion aligns with the ARISE Agenda of Governor Umo Eno, particularly in advancing educational excellence.

The President of the Alumni, Engr. Uwakmfon Michael, reaffirmed the Association’s commitment to supporting members and fostering information-sharing that benefits both alumni and current students. He announced the impending inauguration of an entrepreneurship development centre, in collaboration with Amaecom Global Group, set to serve students in 2026.

Engr. Epelle Hart, President of the Port Harcourt Branch, shared plans for an ICT Hub designed to support undergraduates in leveraging industrial training. The hub will facilitate the acquisition of industry-relevant engineering software and programming skills for 300 and 400-level students.

The event also featured a keynote address by Inemesit Bassey, MD/CEO of Nemterra Developers and 2021 Marine Biology graduate, who presented a detailed analysis of the Association’s strengths, opportunities, weaknesses, and threats.

Over 300 alumni attended the meeting, which included scholarship awards to the top essay competition winners and recognition of fifteen Performing Arts students who showcased traditional dances for attendees. The occasion underscored the strong synergy between alumni engagement, student development, and institutional growth at AKSU.
