Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the founder of the American University of Nigeria (AUN), expressed dissatisfaction with the institution's progress, stating that it has not yet achieved the level of development he envisioned since its establishment 19 years ago.

Speaking at the AUN Founder's Day celebration, Atiku delivered a paper titled "AUN in the Age of Socio-Economic Crisis and Emerging Disruptive Technologies." He revealed that his primary motive for establishing the university was to contribute to society rather than seeking political office.

Atiku conveyed frustration with the leadership transitions at AUN over the past 19 years, emphasizing the importance of focus, organization, patience, attention to detail, and persistence for realizing the university's vision. He called for a return to the institution's original vision and goals.

He stated, "After 19 years, AUN ought to be able to stand on its feet. I have neither asked for nor received a kobo from you since inception and have no plans to do so in the future." Atiku highlighted the need for AUN to be self-sustaining and generate surpluses for further development.
