Bells University VC Criticizes FG’s Neglect of Private Sector Education Investors

The Vice-Chancellor of Bells University of Technology, Ota, Ogun State, Prof. Jeremiah Ojediran, has expressed concerns over the Federal Government's lack of support for private investors in Nigeria's education sector. He raised this issue while addressing the media during a press conference held to announce activities lined up for the institution's 16th Convocation ceremony, set to conclude on Saturday, November 2, 2024.

Prof. Ojediran criticized the government's approach, highlighting the challenges faced by private universities in filling the gaps created by the increasing demand for quality tertiary education in Nigeria. He noted that private institutions have stepped in to address the shortcomings in the public university system, which is plagued by frequent strikes, poor infrastructure, and limited capacity to accommodate the growing number of students seeking admission.

Emphasizing the need for a policy shift, Prof. Ojediran called on the Federal Government to extend support to private universities, similar to what public institutions receive through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND). According to him, government support for the private sector would unlock the potential for significant expansion in the education landscape, enhancing human capital development across the country.

"We reiterate that private universities operate within the same landscape as public ones, and the incursion of private investors into the educational sector is not primarily for profit but driven by a genuine love for Nigeria and the desire to contribute positively to its human capital development," Prof. Ojediran stated.

He further questioned why the government supports private investments in other sectors of the economy, yet treats investors in the education sector with "so much disdain." He urged for a more inclusive approach that recognizes the vital role of private institutions in Nigeria's educational development.

He also spoke on the university's unique "Community University" model, which emphasizes innovative solutions to public engagement and social development, acknowledging education as a lifelong process.

The 16th Convocation ceremony will feature several events, including Jumat and Thanksgiving services, the conferment of honorary degrees, the award of higher degrees and diplomas, and the presentation of prizes. Prof. Ojediran reiterated the commitment of Bells University to providing quality education and urged the government to recognize and support the efforts of private universities in fostering national development.
