BUK VC Prof. Sagir Adamu  Advocates for Collective Responsibility in Reviving Al-Majiri Education System

Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, has emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in reviving and formalizing the Al-Majiri system of education in Northern Nigeria. He made this statement during the 2nd Symposium on Tsangaya System of Education, held on December 15, 2024.

 

Professor Abbas highlighted the historical significance of the Tsangaya system, which has promoted Islamic education and literacy in Northern Nigeria for centuries. However, he identified several challenges facing the system, including lack of formal organization, standardized certification, and clear entry requirements.

To address these challenges, Professor Abbas called on parents, society, and stakeholders to contribute to financing the system and providing essential support, such as feeding, accommodation, and healthcare, to prevent students from resorting to begging.

The symposium featured prominent speakers, including Dr. Sani Idris, Executive Secretary of the National Commission of Al-Majiri and Out of-School Children, who underscored the uniqueness of Qur'anic education and advocated for pedagogical improvements.

 

Senator Sulaiman Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila also stressed the need for collaboration among parents, teachers, and the government to revive and develop the Almajiri system.
