The management of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, formally onboarded newly appointed Directors of Centres and Heads of various Units at the University’s Senate Chamber.

Addressing the appointees, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, stated that the Centres are expected to operate beyond administrative functions and serve as dynamic learning hubs that will contribute to the University’s intellectual advancement and institutional development. She urged the Directors and Heads to be proactive in their duties, while emphasizing the importance of effective documentation and proper record-keeping.

Prof. Omenugha explained that the University previously operated without functional Centres before her emergence as Vice-Chancellor, describing the situation as inconsistent with the standards of a modern university. She noted that the establishment of the Centres was a deliberate move aimed at promoting institutional expansion, innovation, and relevance.

She acknowledged that while some Centres may record significant success, others could face challenges, stressing that their performance would largely depend on the commitment, leadership capacity, and level of understanding demonstrated by those overseeing them. The Vice-Chancellor reiterated that transparency, accountability, and ethical conduct remain core principles guiding the operations of all Centres and Units.

In his presentation, the lead presenter, Prof. Casmir K. C. Ani, charged the appointees to align their responsibilities with the University’s 3Vs agenda of Values, Viability, and Visibility. He encouraged them to strengthen the institution through strategic partnerships, innovative research initiatives, and enhanced global engagement.

Prof. Ani emphasized the need for effective collaboration, institutional synergy, and well-defined strategic planning for the sustainable management of the Centres. He urged the appointees to generate viable ideas, work with the right stakeholders, apply appropriate strategies, and develop plans capable of attracting support, while reminding them of their role as brand ambassadors of the University.
