Delta Teachers Hold Protest Following Colleague's Tragic Death at the Hands of Student's Father

Tragedy struck when a dedicated teacher lost his life in a somber incident in Delta State, prompting the Association of Teachers in Ika South and Ika North East local government areas to stage a peaceful protest. The teachers were collectively expressing their grief and seeking justice for their colleague, Onyeisi Sunday Ufah, who reportedly lost his life in a tragic altercation with a parent.

The accused parent, Nweke Nnajiofor, hailing from Enugu State and working as a butcher, allegedly played a central role in the flogging incident that led to the untimely demise of Mr. Ufah. The deceased teacher was previously associated with Alihame Mixed Secondary School in Alihame, Agbor.

This heart-wrenching incident transpired on October 18, 2023, within the school premises. Ufah tragically met his demise when the accused parent, who is currently in police custody, arrived at the school to seek vengeance against his son. The son had climbed the school fence and consumed palm wine, which had been taken from an elderly man nearby.

The teachers, during their protest in Agbor City, called for justice for their fallen colleague and demanded protection from the government against unruly students and parents who often subject them to harassment.

Comrade Isaac Arimokwu, the Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) in Ika South, expressed deep sorrow over the untimely death and hurried burial of Mr. Ufah. He urged the government to ensure justice for the late Ufah, acknowledging his dedication as an NUT member and his significant contribution as a physics instructor in the community.

Comrade Matthew Chima Anyia, popularly known as Chimex and the Publicity Secretary for the Ika South NUT, emphasized that attacks against teachers have reached alarming levels, particularly in the wake of Ufah's tragic passing.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State strongly condemned the murder of Ufah and cautioned parents and guardians against resorting to unlawful actions when teachers discipline their errant children and wards. He stressed that such misconduct remains unacceptable within all state schools.

Oborevwori affirmed the commitment of the state government to address the situation, saying, "As a state government, we frown seriously at parents going to bully teachers for genuinely meting out disciplinary measures against students for bad behavior such as is alleged in the extant case. I have directed the state police command to investigate the case properly and bring the perpetrators to book."
