Federal Government Reforms Education System, Scraps JSS and SSS

In a significant move, the Federal Government has abolished the Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) system, replacing it with a 12-year uninterrupted basic education model.

This reform aims to align Nigeria's education system with global standards and reduce dropout rates.

 

According to Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, the new system will provide students with vocational and entrepreneurial skills, preparing them for higher education and employment. The government plans to set 16 years as the minimum entry age for tertiary institutions .

 

The reform is expected to have a positive impact on the education sector, including:

To ensure a smooth implementation, the government has outlined strategies, including:

 

- Policy Reforms: Updating existing policies to reflect the new education model.

- Infrastructure Expansion: Upgrading and expanding educational infrastructure to accommodate the new system.

- Teacher Training: Providing teachers with the necessary training and support to effectively implement the new curriculum.

- Curriculum Enhancement: Reviewing and enhancing the curriculum to ensure it meets the needs of the new education model .
