Former Anambra State Governor Calls for Expansion of Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria
Senator Jim Nwobodo advocates for the establishment of more universities and tertiary institutions in Nigeria to address the significant gap between demand and availability of higher education.
Senator Jim Nwobodo, the former governor of old Anambra State, has underscored the pressing need for an increase in the number of universities and tertiary institutions in Nigeria. Speaking from his residence in Amechi, Enugu State, Nwobodo stressed that the current educational infrastructure in the country is inadequate to cater to the burgeoning youth population.
Nwobodo, who received the Founders Award from the national leadership of the Federal Polytechnic Oko Alumni Association, emphasized that the demand for higher education far exceeds the available slots in existing institutions. He cited statistics revealing that annually, nearly two million candidates apply for admission to Nigerian universities, but only a fraction of them gain acceptance.

Expressing concern over this significant gap between demand and supply in higher education, Nwobodo urged authorities to prioritize the establishment of more universities and tertiary institutions across the country. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that any newly licensed institution upholds standards of quality education, regardless of whether it is government-funded or privately owned.
Reflecting on his own contributions to education in Nigeria, Nwobodo recounted his role in elevating the Federal Polytechnic Oko from its initial status as a diploma-awarding institution to its current stature. He also highlighted his establishment of multiple tertiary institutions during his tenure as governor, citing his belief in the pivotal role of education in regional development.
