Northwest University Kano Holds 1-Day Training on Enhancing Internally Generated Revenue
Northwest University Kano, on Monday, 1st December 2025, successfully organized a 1-Day Training on Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) at the Professor Hafiz Abubakar Auditorium, City Campus. The training, initiated by the Council Committee on IGR, brought together Deans, Directors, Heads of Units, and all designated IGR drivers across the University as part of a renewed drive to strengthen the institution’s revenue base.
The event opened with a warm Welcome Address delivered by Dr. Karimatu Isa Maisango, who spoke on behalf of the Chairperson of the Council IGR Committee, Amb. Hajiya Maria Ali Kote, who was unavoidably absent. Dr. Karimatu commended the university leadership for prioritizing capacity building and emphasized the committee’s commitment to developing sustainable revenue-generation mechanisms in line with global best practices.
In his Opening Remarks, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Dr. Tijjani Rufa’i Buhari, who stood in for the Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Aisha Garba, expressed appreciation to the Council IGR Committee for organizing the timely workshop. He highlighted the importance of internally generated revenue in strengthening institutional autonomy and improving service delivery, noting that universities must increasingly diversify funding sources to meet the demands of modern higher education.
The technical sessions featured two insightful presentations. The first, titled “IGR Policy”, was delivered by Prof. Muhammad Bilyaminu Ado of the Department of Economics, who provided an in-depth review of the University’s IGR policy framework, emphasising accountability, efficiency, and innovation in revenue generation.
This was followed by a presentation on “Internally Generated Revenue Strategy and Implementation Framework” by Prof. Abubakar Salisu Garba of the Department of Business Administration. Prof. Garba outlined practical strategies for improving IGR flows, restructuring revenue units, and deploying modern business models to enhance financial sustainability.
The training also featured a series of remarks from key stakeholders. The Bursar of Northwest University Kano, Mal. Salmanu Muhammad Kibiya, commended the initiative and stressed the importance of financial discipline and proper monitoring of revenue-generating activities. Dr. Umar Habib of the Department of Accounting also delivered remarks, focusing on strengthening financial reporting and compliance mechanisms. Similarly, Dr. Nazifi Umar of the Department of Geography shared additional insights on expanding IGR opportunities across academic and research units.
A highly engaging Questions and Answers Session followed, allowing participants to seek clarification, share experiences, and propose new ideas for improving revenue generation within the University.
Dr. Kabiru Muhammad Kofa reiterated the committee’s readiness to support units in implementing the outcomes of the training.
The well-attended event marked another significant step by Northwest University Kano towards building a robust and sustainable IGR structure capable of supporting its growth and academic excellence.
