NSUK Vice Chancellor Charges Postgraduate Students to nurture Research Excellence

The Vice-Chancellor of Nasarawa State University Keffi, Professor Sa'adatu Hassan Liman, has tasked postgraduate students to equip themselves with the necessary steps and procedures for conducting independent research endeavors. 

This charge was given during a one-day workshop on the relationship between supervisors and supervisees, organized by the University's School of Postgraduate Studies held on Thursday 22nd May 2024.

Represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Professor Theophilus Daniel Lagi, the Vice Chancellor emphasized that students with the requisite capacity are better equipped to handle research challenges. 

She lamented that some students resort to unorthodox means to secure favorable treatment from supervisors, only to struggle during internal and external examinations.

Professor Sa'adatu further noted: "some students often absent themselves from supervisory meetings, abandon their projects for years, and then appear during defense, putting undue pressure on supervisors"

She however urged supervisors to be accessible and approachable to ensure timely and high-quality research output.

The Vice Chancellor thanked the School of Postgraduate Studies for organizing the timely workshop and pledged the university management's commitment to academic excellence through due diligence and credibility of academic work.

The Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies, Professor Mohammed Maikano Ari, represented by Deputy Dean on Research, Prof. Shehu Usman described research as a cardinal mandate of the PG school and emphasized the importance of a positive relationship between supervisors and supervisees.

He stated that the workshop aimed to identify the missing links in this relationship and improve research quality.

"Our main purpose here is to interact intellectually to discover what are the missing link so that if the relationship is very cordial, straight forward and seamless, we hope that the quality of research will improve" The Dean stated.

Highlights of the workshop included presentations by esteemed scholars, including Professor Sam Smah of the Baze University Abuja and Professor Makwin Danladi Makut, Dean faculty of natural and applied sciences of NSUK on supervisor-supervisee relationships and the role of supervisees in research and thesis supervision. 

The workshop featured active participation from postgraduate students and lecturers.
