Redeemer's University Hosts Historic Genomics Hackathon
Redeemer's University in Ede, Osun State, Nigeria, has made history by hosting the first virtual reality genomics hackathon in Africa. The Institute of Genomics and Global Health (IGH) organized the IGH XR&AI Genomics Hackathon 2025, which took place from August 4 to 22.
The hackathon aimed to make genomics education more immersive and engaging for African students by incorporating extended reality (XR) and artificial intelligence (AI).
Over 200 participants were selected for a two-week remote phase, with the top 20 progressing to a final one-week onsite phase at IGH.
The participants developed VR-based tools and experiences to enhance understanding of genomic processes, simulate biological processes, and create educational platforms for genomics.
The hackathon sought to address regional gaps in genomics education and technology adoption, targeting students, researchers, and professionals in biotechnology and related fields. By doing so, it provided opportunities for practical learning and innovation in genomics.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Shadrach Olufemi Akindele described the event as "the beginning of a new era in Africa's scientific and technological advancement."
Director of IGH, Professor Christian Happi, noted that the hackathon was a pivotal moment in harnessing cutting-edge technologies for advancing genomic research and addressing healthcare challenges in Africa.
The hackathon has the potential to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application in genomics, producing a new generation of professionals with hands-on experience in the field. By leveraging XR and AI, participants can develop innovative solutions to pressing health and scientific challenges facing Africa and the world.
